The college has started its journey from Banerjeedanga High school with only 50 students on 12th February 1950. The college was shifted to its campus constituted by the generous donation of 12.58 acres of land by the local fighter Late Basanta Kumar Sarkar and 9.56 acres of land by Midnapur Zamindar Company.

The education has an important role in the advancement of human civilization. Empowering the poor and academically backward people of the Garhbeta and its adjoining areas were the sole aim and objectives for founding the Garhbeta College on 13th August 1948. Though the college faced different forms of obstacles like financial crunch, lack of permanent posts, poor communication etc. still the college is marching ahead with its sole objective of providing quality education irrespective of caste, creed, religion, financial and physical health status of the students. Now the college offers 13 Honours subjects, 16 General subjects, one Major Course (OMSV) in Arts, Science and Commerce streams and NCTE approved B.P.Ed course.Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU), a distance learning University is also successfully operating from this college as a study centre.
