Departmental Profile
The significance of teaching and learning ‘History’ is in the apt saying: “If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday”.
Ever since the inception of Belda College in 1963, the Department of History has been an integral part of the College. History is a popular subject with the students of the Humanities stream. There are three (3) full time teachers and three (3) part-time teachers (West Bengal Government Approved) in the Department. A faculty of committed teachers make learning of History more intelligible and interesting to the students by using maps and globes, showing films/documentaries, arranging special lectures, organising educational tours and encouraging students to contribute to the departmental wall magazine ‘Anweshon’. Besides teaching, the Department organizes debates, students’ seminars, and essay and quiz competitions. In 2014, a History Seminal Library (Book Bank) was established to ensure easy accessibility of books to the Honours students on a weekly basis. The Central Library also has a good collection of History books for the Honours as well as General students. The progress of students is evaluated through regular class tests and Internal Assessments. Provision has been made in the departmental routine for tutorials, smart classes and library classes for the Honours students, many of whom are first generation learners. Pupils in the General are also readily guided by the teachers whenever approached.
Departmental students are encouraged to participate in Youth Parliament and Quiz Competition organized by the State Government in the NCC/NSS activities and cultural programmes of the college. The teachers conduct frequent Guardians’ Meet to keep the guardians abreast with the overall performance of their wards. Free consultancy is provided to the students for career related examinations like SSC and WBCS. Mentor-Mentee groups and the Alumni group of the History department are well knit and are in constant touch with the departmental teachers and students on social media. Many students of the department have established themselves in various sectors, especially as accomplished teachers in various H.S. Schools and Degree Colleges and keep touch with the Department as Alumni.
It is the humble goal of the department to retain past experiences, imbibe the growing field of knowledge and prepare its students for new vistas since ‘History’ is a study of the past in the light of the present which also predicts the future.
