DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE

Geography is an art of science that deals with the description of distribution and interactions of the diverse physical, biological, social, cultural, and spatial features of the earth surface. The discipline of Geography acts as an association between the natural and social sciences.  With its unlimited field, geography deals with- upto the horizon of earth surface, upto the uppermost limits of the sky, into space that lies thereafter, into the deepest oceans and then deepest interior of the Earth. It encompasses the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and cryosphere.  A student of Geography can link themselves together with each of these spheres that they can understand how the balance of life possible on planet of Earth. They also study how this delicate balance is disturbed and destructed at the local, regional, and global levels due to anthropogenic activities. A student of geography get opportunity to aware regarding life threatening problems like ozone depletion, climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and disasters result when this interaction is adversely affected by human activity.

ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT: 

• Belda College is one of the few colleges in the Vidyasagar University that offers undergraduate and postgraduate programme in geography. The Department of Geography in Belda College is more than 19 years old, although the general and honours course started in 2001 and 2002 respectively. With enthusiastic effort and dedication of the faculty members of the department of Geography and as per longstanding demand of all stakeholders of the college, the department  was started Post Graduate course in Geography in 2018.    

• The Department of Geography has a well-equipped laboratory, smart class, remote sensing & GIS software and other infrastructure necessary for conducting theory and practical classes. 

• There are more than 2000 books on geography in the central library and Departmental book bank.

• Field visit in different parts of India ( i.e. Sikkim-Gangtok, Kulu-Manali, Rajasthan etc.) has organized on regular basis as per Vidyasagar University syllabus to enhance their field observation power. 

• Project work, student seminar & workshop has regularly organized to  encourage students in research work. The faculty of the Department is actively engaged in teaching and research activities. 

• Department has received one minor research project funded by UGC for the year 2011-13.The Department has successfully completed one innovation project under the supervision of  Dr. Lipika Mandal. 

• The Department has a well-equipped computer laboratory  and soil laboratory 

• The department has organized special lectures of eminent emeritus Professor Dr. Subhas Mukhopadhaya, University of Calcutta in 2016  

• The department has organized special lectures of Dr. Anuradha Choudry, IIT, Kharagpur and Flore Lafaya De Micheaux, University of lausseanna in 2017  

• The Department has organized interdisciplinary and collaborative state & national level seminar

• The department has regularly organized and participated  in extension activities at neighboring villages. 

PROSPECT: 

After completing the course, the students will be sufficiently prepared for professional careers in geography and allied disciplines like GIS and Remote Sensing, travel and tourism, Demography, planning, marketing, surveying. The Alumni of this department have made significant contributions in various places of west Bengal and also in different parts of India.
