DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE

Sociology can be defined as a study of society or social life, of group interaction and of Social behaviour. Infact, sociology can also be conceived as a discipline that aims to connect everyday life practices or micro level interactions to the various aspects of macro level knowledge formation. It encompasses all other aspects of society likely history, politics, economics etc. However, Sociology, as compared to other social sciences, is a young discipline especially in India. Since its formal advent within the Indian academic world in 1919, (as compared to its development in European and American society in the 17th century), sociology in India has strived to develop the ability to grasp the myriad realities (both historically and from present scenario) that exists within and outside its society.

COURSE & PROGRAMME

B.A. Honours and General course in Sociology is affiliated under Vidyasagar University. Presently the Department is following the CBCS programme prescribed by Vidyasagar University.

HISTORY & ACTIVITIES

Department of Sociology of Belda College began its journey in the year 2007 offering students Bachelor of Arts (General) Degree. With sincere dedication and untiring efforts of faculty members, the Department successfully offered its first Honours course in 2009. With a humble beginning, the Department of Sociology at present has more than 100 students (both Honours and General) under its tutelage and 07 (Seven) faculty members. Our Sociology undergraduate program aims to equip students with the necessary tools & skills to engage more effectively with the world around them. Our program combines an emphasis on social theory and research methods and special emphasis is given on the development of each student. The overall objective of the programme focuses on the conglomeration of other disciplines which in turn augments the interdisciplinary outlook among students. 

Till date the Department has successfully organized 3 State-level Seminars in collaboration with departments like Political Science, Education. Other Departmental activities like Quiz competitions, Poster/Paper presentations, Alpana Competitions are organized for the students to supplement classroom teaching. This year, the Department has organized a recreational tour to Bhasraghat for its students and Faculty members. Students are encouraged to seriously take part in college activities and NSS, NCC activities. Sports has always been an integral part of our Department. In 2019 our Department secured 2nd position in the Inter-Departmental Cricket competition organized by Belda College.

Therefore, the academic programme of both Honours and General courses are designed to induce the aptitude and skills among students required for analyzing the intricate details of the society as well as develop the sociological insight necessary for constructing better future and reality for the human world.

ALUMNI

The department maintains connection with students who have completed their course and have officially left college through its Alumni Committee. Our alumni members range from those who are pursuing Higher Education to Teachers in colleges/Schools. At present the Department has 50 registered Alumni members who contribute to the upliftment of the department in various ways.
